Dear AVA-Berliners,
Gratia Stryker-Härtel will speak to the Stammtisch about the failings of the current US prison system, outlining the work of various organizations fighting for reform and touching on specific cases, such as the torture victims of former Chicago police officer Jon Burge. She will also suggest opportunities to participate in concrete actions on behalf of people who are likely innocent and suffering behind bars (such as taking a group picture in support of Troy Davis, currently on death row in Georgia) and will point us to further resources for individual research, education and activism.
Gratia Stryker-Härtel has been passionately interested in the issue of prison reform for many years, has kept up with news and research in the field, and has spoken on an informal basis with others who have also suffered from their contact with the US justice system. She knows a number of people personally who have been affected in many different ways by the prison system (encompassing victims, perpetrators, falsely accused people and falsely convicted people), including a family member, but her talk will focus on research and current issues rather than her own story.
